Safety Is Our First Priority

 The current Colonial Board of School Directors, including every member of the Proven Team Slate recognized the need for increased security in all areas from Kindergarten to High School and has implemented significant security measures during the past six years.  Two major areas are the electronic doors and video cameras. Below is a listing of a chart of security improvements over the past six years

2001/2002 –

all classrooms in CSD provided with Crisis Response charts
started electronic door project at buildings and started video camera project at PWHS
 

2002/2003 –

all classrooms in CSD provided with Evacuation/Sheltering Procedures
chart all intrusion alarm systems updated at all buildings
added three security guards at PWHS plus five hall monitors
 

2003/2004 –

residency investigator added
 

2004/2005 –

started summer CSD athletic field security coverage
expanded CCTV to include Tennis Courts
started numbering of all outside door at all buildings
 

2005/2006 –

Library outfitted with cameras and alarm system
started providing security coverage for large rentals at all facilities – cost passed onto the rental group
 

2006/2007 –

expanded camera project to include Colonial Elementary, Facilities Management Center and Maintenance Shop.
Facilities Management Center equipped with a 2nd camera control location, alarm system and electronic door control
participate in Montgomery County “Emergency Panic Button” initiative by serving on the committee

Additional security measures implemented by the current Board and on-going in Colonial are:

  • Monthly police/school/probation meetings

  • Training by police departments in our buildings for “rapid deployment procedures”

  • Electronic version of floor plans provided to the three police departments

  • Participation in major Emergency Management exercises in Whitemarsh Township

  • Practice lock down and mass evacuation of buildings to an alternate site

  • Review and update of emergency procedures throughout CSD

  • Standardization of fire drill procedures throughout the District

  • Maintain the Memorandum of Understanding between the District and the police coordinate 2-way radio communications for all buildings

  • Periodic “security assessments” of all buildings in an attempt to find weaknesses
